Pregnant rape victims killed in "honour killings"

Libyan women and girls who become pregnant through rape risk being murdered by their own families in so-called "honour killings", according to aid workers. [Read more]

It's bad enough that the girls got raped and made pregnant. Instead of finding comfort from their families, they get killed? That's outrageous! What kind of people would kill their own children who were victims of the violent crime?

Upon reading the article further, I realised that I'm living in a different society and I lack understanding of their culture.

In Lybia, some of the girls would rather die than get raped (some killed themselves). So to die at the hands of their own family may be better than being raped to death or having to live with diseases like AIDS. Also, to be seen naked and violated is worse than death for them in their society.

Of course, it's sad that women have to feel that way at all. But they do. So I can't say that their families are all wrong to kill them - if they want to be killed. Because I'm sure there will be some girls who still want to live despite being raped, made pregnant or infected with AIDS.

What if its Yu-Kym living in a culture where arranged marriage is a norm and not conforming to it, the penalty would have been mutilation of her genitals. To erase the shame of the family of a rebellious girl.

I suppose Yu-Kym wouldnt have lived a single day past her puberty.

One know that the these young women are Muslim.

Facts indicate it is no accident or coincidence that Muslims commit 91 percent of honor killings worldwide.

For example, Syria in 2009 scrapped a law limiting the length of sentences for honor killings, but "the new law says a man can still benefit from extenuating circumstances in crimes of passion or honour 'provided he serves a prison term of no less than two years in the case of killing.'"

This site:

Gathers data on honour killings from around the world. The majority of these action center in the middle-east and north africa.

Is should be mentioned that honour killings are on the increase in the States as a result of immigration of large numbers of people from Muslim regions.

Honour killings is a poor use of terms as there is no honour saved.

The lives of the rape victims is trivialized and cheapened. There is no compassion, mercy or consideration other than saving the reputation of the family and village.

Brutal, barbaric and uncivilized are a few words I would us to describe those who practice this vile action upon helpless young girls!
