Friends??

A man dragged woman into the bushes. He wanted to rape her. She begged him to let her go, offering him money, her mobile phone and even oral sex. He refused and raped her anyway. After the rape, he wanted to be friends with her and offered his handphone number. Friends?! [Read more]

My sister received an SMS this morning at 7am. A man who claimed to be an air-con contractor said he wanted to be friends, asked her whether her air-con was ok and how we sleep without aircon. He asked her for her name. We don't even know which air-con guy this is because a number of them had come. She ignored his messages and then he sent this:

"i tml sms to u k.. hope u have a nice day... dun mind can i make friend with ur sis"

Initially we found it hilarious, then we felt disgusted, then it became creepy. Coincidentally, the electric light outside our door had gone out and someone broke the cover of the electricity meter/circuit breaker that's outside our door. My sister informed the town council about these and someone can to fix the lights already. It is possible that someone might be planning to break in. We may be paranoid but it's better to be safe than sorry when there are contractors who know that only 2 women live in here.

Each of us have a small torch light (courtesy of ST701.com) but we want to keep intruders out. Any idea how to secure the grilles? They are locked but those type of locks are easy to pick or break.

Thanks but I don't need a surveillance camera. I want to keep people out.

Haha, i once thought of this crazy, idea, You know the cisco alarm box outside banks? Just attach one "phony" version, as in it does not do anything, but give people the impression the alarm will set off if they attempt to do anything funny.
Haha, if you plan to use this idea, then better not allow this comment to be view by other.

incidentally, that "friendly" rapist got 16 years jails and 20 strokes. Maybe the judge should pass him this sentence and offer to be his fren.

I suggest you complain to the company (contractor's) to stop this nonsense. Consider very close tro stalking already

Yu-Kym,

You call it a torch, we call it a flashlight. I carry an LED light with me everywhere, one AAA battery will run the light 20+ hours.

Since you have security bars on your windows here is how you can make them more secure.

Installing Security Bars For Windows

Print this Add Your Own Project comments

One of the most effective means of deterring burglars, is to install security bars for windows in your home. Security bars are great for keeping unwanted intruders out, and may also help lower your home insurance premiums a little as your home becomes less at risk for a burglary. Installing security bars yourself is not that difficult, and can save a lot money.

Tools and Materials Needed:

Tape measure
Security bars
Drill
Drill Bits
Long deck screws or security screws
Step 1- Choosing Security Bars

When shopping for security bars, you might consider visiting a machine shop and having custom security bars fabricated for your windows. Generally, these types of security bars are crafted of steel or iron, and are very secure; however, they can be quite expensive. Alternatively, some larger hardware stores carry adjustable window security grills that are adequate in most situations. They are not as strong or secure; however, they are much less expensive.

You may also choose security bars, than can be unlocked, opened or removed from the inside of the house. There are several good designs available that make this feature part of their design. If having the security bars custom made, you should have the machine shop integrate this type of functionality into the design.

Step 2- Measure Your Windows

Measure the openings of the windows where you want to install the security bars. Next, place the security bars up against the window opening and draw a mark where the fastening screws will be secured.

Step 3- Drilling Placement Holes

Next, drill holes in the window frame opening that match the marks you made for aligning the security bars with the window frame.

Step 4- Install the Security Bars

Place the security bars up against the window frame; screw the long deck screws (or security screws) in to the window frame. Always make sure the screws go all the way through and into the window framing (not just the window frame casing).

Repeat the process for any other windows, where you will be installing security bars onto the window frames.

Tips & Warnings

Security bars keep people out, but they also keep people in as well. Therefore, make sure that your security bars can be open easily from the inside.

You should never place security bars on the windows of a small child's room without first establishing a means of entry in case of a fire or when the main door is blocked. Small children may not be able to work an un-locking mechanism that may be associated with the security bars. Furthermore, you should teach older children how to open the security bars, and should let them practice doing so frequently so that they are prepared in case of a fire or other emergency.

Installing security bars onto your windows is a fairly easy project, and it does a lot to provide safety and security for your home and the ones inside the house. Make sure to allow for options for escape in the case of fire or other emergency.

Most likely security screws or longer screws as described will improve your security.

Because the contractor knows where we live, we need to be careful about making a complaint.

Yu-Kym, if I am not wrong, the locking mechanism for your window grille consist of a small circular catch which you hold with a thumb and forefinger; and guide it into a small triangle shaped metal hook.

Both catch and hook are made from aluminium, even a small test-pen screw driver can pry them apart. I could do that in all the window grilles I tested.

The only way is to get a wide padlock and lock each pane of grille to each other (the vertical member of their frame overlap each other). If there are 3 panes, you need 2 padlocks.

Did I confused you with the terminology?

Regards Leo

Once the sliding glass windows are opened, the window grilles are useless.

Unwittingly perhaps, your physical attributes have made you a target.

For your safety, please install a couple of mini survellience cameras (with glass doomed covers) at prominent positions eg at the corridor wall above your window. Linked the cameras to a disc drive located away from home or record them in an internet host website.

Cameras are very good deterents. Most intruders would backed off if they think their movements are recorded.

Make a police report stating the names of contractors who recently renovated your flat.

Do not even for a moment, think that rape is not possible to happen in your own house.

Yu-Kym,

You and your sister are aware that women have been molested and raped in SG. No city is free of male predators.

Since you have security bars on your windows here is how you can make them more secure.

Carry a gun and shoot when required.

Isn't SG following USA in everything?

Yu-Kym,

Are you saying the contractor might take action against you and your sister if you filed a complaint!

If that is the case the contractor is completly untrustworthy and should be exposed as possibly incompetent and like not trustworthy. If a contractor will not take criticism and improve job and professional performance, the truth about that contractor should come out.

If you would be endangered by telling the truth about this contractor then there is something terribly wrong with a system that allows and encourages such contractors.

The system is awful because;
(1) the locals are largely love a "bargain" or "good deal" &,
(2) contractors try their damn best to get many sales to achieve economies of scale.

Thus, contractors resort to tactics like doing a service at "cost" to attract sales & then pressurizing clients to buy another service. If all else fails, be certain the most inferior material would be sourced and/or your order is the last priority with a high chance things will be done in a rush or the team will run out of supporting materials - eg silicon for sealing up air-con holes.

Building works are always more problematic cos there can be a thousand & one differences, even for installations between identical apartments.

Unless you are very alert to potential problems, the slightess oversight have a major effect on the completed work.

My preference is to invite the contractor to site to trace out the scope of work and examine whether other building services would be affected, eg touch up paint work, cracked tiles or walls, etc.

Due to strict building codes, most walls are made of cement materials. It can be difficult to predict whether, say drilling a concrete wall, would result in cracking the wall or floor or tiles nearby.

It's good to ask the contractor to recommend an extra service plus cost, eg drill wall using diamond drill-bits rather than normal drill-bit, to prevent cracked tiles. That way, the contractor will appreciate your concern & take extra care during drilling.

Consider providing cold drinks, packaged food & proper washing up facilities for their workers (who are usually underpaid!). Such gestures are so rare their boses would exhort the workers to do a good job.

The extra cost incurred go a long way to alleviate the difficult and uncomfortable (humid) working environment in Singapore.

Like my wife's gynaecologist used to say, "for those appreciative clients, I put in an extra stitch to tighten the birth canal".

To me, if you cannot afford to pay more than the market (normal) price, you can't expect sterling service.

Let me quote specific examples; to remove old pipes & install brand new copper water pipes in a HDB 3-room apartment, it requires more materials than a private 3-room apartment due to the much smaller floor area in the latter. Price for HDB = $1800; Private = $3000. If you are prepared to pay $2800 for the HDB apartment, the contractor will guarantee the pipes wont leak for 5 years. For $1,800, 6 months guarantee.

Sorry, you get what you pay for. Believe me, I have been in the Building Industry for over 40 years. The established high price contractors do not muck around requesting friendship from clients.

Hi Yu-Kym,
This type of grill always offer lowest security protection. I have these options for you; hopefuly it works out for you.

1. Instal a security alarm. You can put a magnetic or vibration sensor on this window pane/body. This is very useful and probably expensive in SIN.

2. Door knob alarm. this is very useful and working concept is straight forward. Put one on your door knob. Get extra unit, modify it and instal on this window pane grill. Should someone touch on it, the mini alarm will be triggered. Cheap and practical.

Yu-Kym,

One more piece of home security advice. Relplace all the screws in your entry door. The doors striker plate screws should be double the legnth of whatever is used now, and the same for the door hinges.

When somenone tries to break in through a door short fastners will allow the door to collaspe when repeated force is applied.

Just buy a big sticker to stuck on your front door that says... "BEWARE OF GUARD DOGS".... no hassles ;)

I believe u reside in your new home, a HDB flat? I believe if you stick that "beware of guard dogs" sign on your front door, everyone will know they would be "fearsome guard dogs" the likes of chihuahuas? lol

I would rather you stick a huge black mole on a strategic point on your face whenever you open the door to entertain an unwelcomed visitor. lol
