Money, love and sex: will they satisfy or kill you?

7
I know I can be obsessive about certain things. My friend sent me a song yesterday and I've been listening to it over and over again on my computer, on my handphone and on my laptop. I just paused it because I can't write while listening to music.

It's not the lastest song but the theme song You Know My Name (from Casino Royale soundtrack) has one of the best-written lyrics I've ever read! (I watched the movie but didn't listen to the soundtrack back then because I was too busy listening to and singing church songs.) I love it when words or pictures make me think beyond what's obvious.

I'd like to share with you my interpretation and thoughts around the lyrics. Here's the song and lyrics first, and my thoughts below.

Chris Cornell - You Know My Name lyrics

If you take a life
Do you know what you'll give?
Odds are you won't like What it Is.

When the storm arrives
Would you be seen with me?
By the merciless eyes I've deceived

I've seen angels fall from blinding heights
But you yourself are nothing so divine
Just next in line

Arm yourself because no one else here will save you
The odds will betray you
And I will replace you
You can't deny the prize it may never fulfill you
It longs to kill you
Are you willing to die?
The coldest blood runs through my veins
You know my name

If you come inside
Things will not be the same
When you return to my eyes

And if you think you've won
You never saw me change
The game that we have been playing

I've seen diamonds cut through harder men
Then you yourself but if you must pretend
You may meet your end

Arm yourself because no one else here will save you
The odds will betray you
And I will replace you
You can't deny the prize it may never fulfill you
It longs to kill you
Are you willing to die?
The coldest blood runs through my veins

Try to hide your hand
Forget how to feel (forget how to feel)
Life is gone
With just a spin of the wheel (spin of the wheel)

Arm yourself because no one else here will save you
The odds will betray you
And I will replace you
You can't deny the prize it may never fulfill you
It longs to kill you
Are you willing to die?
The coldest blood runs through my veins
You know my name (You Know My Name)

You Know My Name (You Know My Name)
You Know My Name
You Know My Name
You Know My Name

My interpretation and thoughts around the lyrics:
- I am the only one who can save myself.
- The only way to win is to be the coldest.
- Am I willing to give up everything for what I want, when what I want cannot satisfy me but may even kill me?

So what is it that I want? The 3 things that I can think of are Money, Love and Sex.

Money
We have to work to earn our own money. Nobody's going to give us any (only a small number of people are lucky enough to inherit money).
To make money, we need to make some tough decisions. Sometimes it must be obtained through cold, hard means. Even making money off the stock market means you must made someone else poorer.
We all know that obsession with money can destroy ourselves and our relationships and sometimes we can never be truly satisfied with the riches we have, money does not always make us happy.

Love
I ask myself: Am I willing to give up everything for love? The answer is No. I am not willing to give up my individuality, beliefs and principles for love. I had been on the verge of dying inside because of love so I understand what it means to have a love that could actually kill me (I don't mean murder or suicide). I had to save myself from it - there was nobody there to save me. I had to be cold in order to save myself. People say true love exists but I have never seen or experienced "true love" in action. Perhaps we are chasing an illusion. We all know love hurts. How can we ever win in love? Is being cold the only way to win?

Sex
Everybody wants sex. (The urge may be suppressed by religious and moral beliefs / commitments). Some people are willing to give up everything for sex - their families, their children, their health and their money. They have unprotected sex, they continue with their extra-marital affairs despite getting caught, they spend all their earnings on paid sex, etc. Why are they willing to give up everything for something that will not satisfy them but kill them? Who's going to save them when their get HIV and who's going to help or pity them when their family abandons them?

Know one can save themselves.
I know you no longer belive this, but whether you accept this or not, is the fact that we were all saved more than 2,000 years ago.

Being coldest will insure that many will avoid you, fall away from you.

What are you looking to win? If there is something to win, what is the prize? (Love, sex? ? ? something else?)

Your last point is baffling an worrisome. What do you want so badly that is might kill you?

The lyrics of the soundtrack are just that. Words. You are giving them meaning and life they were never intended to have.

You had to be 'cold to save yourself'. From what did you save yourself from.

You leave more questions unanswered here than you answer.

I look forward to you response.

I also know that I do want to pray for you!

They would satisfy anyone provided we own and use them wisely.. if misuse, it will destroy us...completely.

Money is merely a means of paying for the services or goods from another party. It can be earned again and again. If it is necessary to be kind by spending it, eg the deaf girl selling phone trinkets at hawker centres, do so. Your actions will gladden both her heart and yours. People with vast reserves of money worry about a million things - their relatives envy them, their friends are truly friends? their competitors want to cut them down. They are the ones with a truly mega anxiety about the status and security of their wealth because that wealth is their only security blanket.
Love - alas cannot be commanded or bought. If the person whom you cannot lived without decides to leave you, tell yourself it is just like a lucky draw. That person is good, and you want him very much - BUT the fact of the matter is that he is not prepared to live his life for you. Therefore he is not prepared to care for you when you are sick, cry with you when you are depressed, laugh with you at the stupid acts of life, sacrifice his wish for a Nikon camera by buying you a new watch, shop with you as you agonised over the color of a pair of high heels. So if he is NOT any of those things that give meaning and joy in life, what have you lost?
Keep building bonds of friendship with as many people as you can. Be kind and considerate and look out for others. One day, a friend will notice a someone suitable for you and put in a nice words to you both. That kind of introduction will blosoom into a deeper relationship as you build on the good points you heard about each other. Believe me, love is always around the corner waiting for you.
Sex.
Sex should be the preserve of a stable and matured relationship. Sex encompasses a million factors concerning your life, your future and your happiness. Dont give it lightly and dont accept it readily.
Unless you regard your partner with the fondest of intentions, please be extremely caring even when you share it. For the partner should be confident that the sex he/she is sharing is not a means to score or chalk up victories. The partner must know the durability of the relationship before sex is involved. The novelty of sex with a new partner wears out too.
Sex will spoil the very difficult friendship between a man and a woman. The best friends I have are those woman whom I have good and close relationships. We liked each other immensely, we ached to consumate our feelings, but we discussed and discovered that many factors contribute to this liking between us. Sex may or may not add to the liking. Sex is always there waiting for us if we want it. If we consumated our friendship, the magic of our self-control would be gone forever.
Some of these friends are happily married with grown-up kids. Their spouses looked kind of puzzled whenever we meet - we ask each other 'still love me?" and get "yes, I do' replies; pumped each other hands glad that we can still be close and trustworthy friends.

David,

If we were all saved more than 2,000 years ago, then why are babies still getting raped?

Most people are colder than they dare to admit. Coldness is necessary at times for survival. E.g. the war against terrorism involves killing in cold blood.

Some examples of "prizes" are the 3 things
I mentioned above.

When I mention killing, it does not mean killing in the absolute physical sense. It can be psychological. But psychological can also result in physical deterioration and death.

In my post, Artists Misunderstood, you mentioned that you appreciate art. The arts is a reflection of humanity. Not all lyrics are meant to mean something. But the ones here mean something to me.

Being cold to save oneself is essential in life. A very simple example is office politics.

Human beings do have have all the answers. We have more questions than answers really. People who think they have more answers than questions are those who are not aware of their ignorance.

Anon,
I disagree with out thoughts about money. Money is underrated by some, yet overrated by others.

About love, "Believe me, love is always around the corner waiting for you." unless you are referring to love that could come from family, strangers, friends and animals, I can't agree either. There are many people who are single - maybe love was rejected or never found - and are "good" people.

About sex, it's very complex yet simple. A clear mind is necessary. I agree that friends should not sleep together. http://yu-kym.blogspot.com/2009/05/sex-clouds-your-judgment.html

Anon, you need to think deeper into it to understand. Or maybe you are fortunate enough to have never had anything tough going for you.
